James Stewart

Date of Fellowship admission: 29 November 1681
James Stewart was one of the original twenty-one Fellows of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh when it was incorporated by royal charter on 29 November 1681. His name was written eleventh on the charter. Stewart received his medical degree from the University of Leiden in 1674, at the age of twenty-two, having earlier graduated Master of Arts. In March 1682 he served on a committee tasked with revising the Edinburgh Pharmacopoeia. Stewart died in January 1684, having attended only fifteen meetings of the College.
Fellowship
The main qualification issued by the College, awarded regularly since the College’s foundation. This qualification was granted based on demonstrated breadth of experience and did not require an individual to pass a certain examination.
