James Ormiston Affleck

Sir James Ormiston Affleck was born in Stockbridge, Edinburgh, in 1840. He received his medical training in Edinburgh alongside his elder brother, who died shortly after qualifying from tuberculosis. Affleck obtained his MD in 1869 and worked throughout his career in a range of posts at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, including assisting Sir Andrew Douglas Maclagan in the Department of Medical Jurisprudence. He held general practices at various times in Clarence Street, Henderson Row and Heriot Row, and served in several city appointments, including Physician to the New Town Dispensary and Consulting Physician to the City Fever Hospital. He campaigned actively for the establishment of the Longmore Hospital for Incurables at Salisbury Place. He was elected a Fellow of the College in 1875, was knighted in 1911, and died in Edinburgh on 24 September 1922.
