James Muttlebury

James Muttlebury's year of birth is contested; it has been recorded as 1772, 1775 or 1780. He was a medical student at the University of Edinburgh between 1809 and 1810 and received his MD from the University of St Andrews on 21 April 1810. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh the same year. Muttlebury had a long career in the Army Medical Service, first as a regimental mate in 1793, then as surgeon to the 59th Regiment of Foot in 1796. He became Deputy Inspector of Hospitals and Inspector of Health for the port of Suriname in 1806. He retired from the army in 1816 with the rank of Inspector of Hospitals and was admitted an Extra-Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of London in 1821. He settled in Bath in 1822 and was elected physician to the Bath General Hospital that year, later to the United Hospital of Bath in 1826. He died in 1832.
