James Murray Lindsay earned his MD from the University of St Andrews in 1859. After a brief period as House Physician at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, he spent most of his career working in asylums. His first appointment was as Acting Physician at James Murray's Royal Asylum for Lunatics near Perth, filling the post vacated by his brother, William Lauder Lindsay. He later held posts at several institutions before becoming Superintendent of the Derby County Asylum. He served as President of the Medico-Psychological Association and died in Aldershot in 1911.
