James Murdoch Brown graduated MB CM from the University of Edinburgh in 1874 as first in his class and earned his MD in 1897. He worked as Physician to the Fountainbridge Dispensary, later becoming Assistant Physician at the Royal Infirmary and Consulting Physician to the West Dispensary. He also taught at the University of Edinburgh, serving as Assistant to the Professors of Clinical Medicine, Institutes of Medicine, and Practice of Physic, before becoming a Tutor in Clinical Medicine. He died in 1925.
