James Middlemass

James Middlemass was born circa 1863 in Edinburgh. Middlemass was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1896 and graduated with a medical degree from the University of Edinburgh in 1898. Following graduation, Middlemass was appointed Medical Superintendent of Sunderland Borough Mental Hospital. Middlemass married the sister of Elkins, his predecessor at Sunderland Mental Hospital. Middlemass and Elkins worked closely together and jointly published an article in the Journal of Mental Science in 1899. Middlemass assisted in preparing the 'Handbook of Mental Nursing' which was published by the Medico-Psychological Association. During the First World War Middlemass was Chairman of the Local Medical War Committee. He held the position of President of the Sunderland Division of the British Medical Association twice and was also appointed a Lecturer in Psychological Medicine at the College of Medicine, Newcastle. James Middlemass died in 1922 aged fifty-nine.
