James Mellis

James Mellis was born on 16 November 1781. He obtained an MA from Marischal College, Aberdeen, in 1799, became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1802 and attained his MD in 1806. From 1804 to 1805 he served as surgeon on HMS Fame before joining the Bengal Army in 1806. Mellis rose to Surgeon in 1818 and Superintending Surgeon in 1837. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1827 and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1844. He retired in 1844 to London, where he died on 17 March 1846.
