James McGrigor

Sir James McGrigor, first baronet, was born in Inverness-shire in 1771. He graduated MA from Marischal College, Aberdeen, in 1788, then studied medicine at Aberdeen and Edinburgh. He was appointed military surgeon, working in Flanders, Bremen, the West Indies and India. McGrigor completed his MD at Marischal College in 1804 and in 1805 was made deputy inspector general of hospitals in England. In 1811 he was made physician to the Portsmouth garrison and later chief of the medical staff of the Peninsular Army. In 1814 McGrigor was knighted and promoted to director general of the Army Medical Department. He died in London in 1858.
