James Lorrain Smith

James Lorrain Smith was born in Half Morton in 1862, the son of the Revd Walter Smith. He graduated MB from the University of Edinburgh in 1889 and undertook research in Oxford on blood oxygen capacity. He graduated MD in 1893 and was appointed Lecturer in Pathology at Queen's College Belfast and Honorary Pathologist to the Royal Victoria Hospital. He later became Professor of Pathology at the University of Manchester in 1904 and at the University of Edinburgh in 1912. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1913. During the First World War he developed the hypochlorite antiseptic solution known as Eusol. He was elected Dean of the Medical Faculty in 1919. He died in Edinburgh in 1931.
