James Hunter Harvey Pirie

James Hunter Harvey Pirie was born in Glasgow in 1878, the son of Dr John Pirie. He graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1902 and served between 1902 and 1904 as Medical Officer, Bacteriologist, and Geologist to the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition, publishing reports on bacteriology, geology, and glaciology of the South Orkney Islands. He graduated MD from the University of Edinburgh in 1907 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1910. In 1913 he joined the Colonial Medical Service in Kenya and later became Superintendent of the Routine Division of the South African Institute for Medical Research in Johannesburg. He later named the bacterial genus Listeria after Joseph Lister. He died in South Africa in 1965.
