James Haig Ferguson trained at the University of Edinburgh, earning his MB CM in 1884 and his MD in 1890. He specialised in gynaecology and midwifery and worked at several hospitals in Edinburgh, including Leith Hospital, the Royal Maternity Hospital, and the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, where he also held a teaching role in clinical gynaecology at the University. He served as Chairman of the Central Midwives Board of Scotland. He co-authored several works, most notably 'The Handbook of Obstetrical Nursing' with Francis William Nichol Haultain, which was published in five editions. He died in Edinburgh in May 1934.
