James Gibson Cattanach was born in Edinburgh in 1851, the son of a merchant originally from the Highlands. After education at Edinburgh High School, he worked in business in London before returning to Edinburgh to study medicine. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1893 and held posts as House Surgeon at Simpson Memorial Hospital and House Physician at the Royal Infirmary. He was elected President of the Royal Medical Society in 1894 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1898. During the First World War he served as a Captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps in Bangor, Wales. He died in Edinburgh in 1936.
