James Foulis was the son of Dr John Foulis of Sydney and grandson of the seventh baronet of Woodhall. Educated in Australia, he came to Scotland to study medicine, beginning at the University of Glasgow under Professors Allan Thomson and Joseph Lister, before transferring to the University of Edinburgh when Lister joined its staff. He graduated MB in 1872 and MD in 1874, his thesis 'On the Development of the Ova and Structure of the Ovary in Man and other Mammalia' winning a gold medal. After graduation, he became assistant to Dr Thomas Keith and later to his brother Dr George Keith, whom he succeeded in practice. He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.
