James Cumming obtained his MA from Edinburgh in 1868 and his MD in 1871, for which he was awarded a gold medal for his thesis on antiseptic surgery. He studied in Berlin and Vienna before returning to Edinburgh to serve as Medical Officer to the New Town Dispensary. He was appointed Extra Physician to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children and elected Ordinary Physician in March 1878. His father was also a physician and he assisted in his father's practice until his death on 9 May 1879.
