James Craufurd Gregory

James Craufurd Gregory was born in 1801, the son of James Gregory and Isabella Macleod. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh from 1820 to 1823 and graduated MD in 1824, before spending three years in Paris studying anatomy under Rene Laennec. On returning to Edinburgh he served as lecturer, physician to the Royal Infirmary, physician to the lunatic asylum, medical secretary to the Board of Health and superintendent of the Cholera Hospital. Gregory acted as secretary to both the Edinburgh Medico-Chirurgical Society and the Royal Society of Edinburgh. In 1829 he revised and reissued William Cullen's 'First Lines of the Practice of Physic' and published papers in the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal. In 1831 he made the first link between coal dust inhalation and lung disease, describing coal workers' pneumoconiosis. Gregory died in 1832 after contracting typhus.
