James Craufurd Dunlop

James Craufurd Dunlop was born in Barrhead in 1865. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1887 and undertook further medical study in Strasbourg, Vienna, and Paris. On returning to Edinburgh, he carried out research into the nutrition and metabolism of prisoners and people living in poverty and practised as a paediatrician at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children for almost two decades. In 1909 he was appointed Medical Superintendent of Statistics at the General Register Office for Scotland and later became Registrar General. He was elected Vice-President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1922 and died in 1944.
