James Burnes

James Burnes was born on 12 February 1801 to James and Elizabeth Burnes. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh from 1817 to 1818 and also in London. In 1821 he joined the Indian Medical Service and moved to Bombay. He received his MD from the University of St Andrews in 1824. In 1830 he published 'Narrative of a Visit to the Court of the Sinde', describing his encounters with the amirs of Sind. Burnes married Sophia Holmes in 1829 and they had nine children. He returned to the UK in 1834, became a Fellow of the College and was awarded an LLD by the University of Glasgow. In 1837 William IV appointed him Knight of the Royal Guelphic Order. Burnes returned to India and practised until illness forced his retirement in 1849. He died in London on 19 September 1862.
