James Brown received his medical degree from the University of Rheims on 12 April 1704. He petitioned the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh for a licentiate examination on 15 January 1706 and was examined by Drummond and Leirmont on 29 January, with twenty Fellows present. Brown was examined on 'the institutions, aphorisms, and two practical cases' and admitted Licentiate on 25 February 1706. He was admitted as a Fellow on 12 August 1707.
