James Bertie Simpson was born on 9 December 1863 in Inverness. He qualified MB CM from the University of Edinburgh in 1887 and proceeded to the MD in 1892. He served as Assistant Physician in Ballachulish and later practised in Golspie, also serving as Surgeon at Lawson Memorial Hospital for forty years. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh on 21 July 1925. He served prominently within the British Medical Association and was appointed CBE in 1942. He died on 16 November 1948 aged 84.
