James Allan Gray

James Allan Gray was educated at the University of Edinburgh, earning his MA in 1872, MB CM in 1876, and MD in 1880, for which he was awarded a gold medal. After serving as Resident Physician at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, he moved to Leith, where he became Medical Officer for the burgh and Leith Hospital. He was a member of the General Council of the University of Edinburgh and taught clinical medicine to women students at a time when they were excluded from mainstream university and Royal Infirmary teaching. He also served for many years as Surgeon to the 5th Volunteer Battalion, Royal Scots, and was awarded the Volunteer Decoration for long service in 1902. He retired in 1929 and died in 1930.
