Henry Dewar was born Henry Frazer in 1771 in Fife, the son of John Frazer, minister of the Associate Church at Auchtermuchty. Initially a minister of the Associate Church at Saltcoats, Ayrshire, he inherited the estate of Lassodie, Beath, through his mother, which required him to change his surname to Dewar. He was awarded his MD by the University of Edinburgh on 25 June 1804. Dewar joined the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1801 and served as hospital mate and later assistant surgeon with the 30th Regiment of Foot. He published on dysentery and other diseases while in Egypt, including 'De ophthalmia Aegypti'. He joined the Royal Medical Society in 1803 and was admitted a Licentiate of the College on 1 February 1814 and elected a Fellow on 7 February 1815. He was elected a member of the Aesculapian Club and the Harveian Society of Edinburgh in 1816. He died in Edinburgh on 18 or 19 January 1823.
