Henry Aylmer Dumat was born in Mauritius in 1861. He qualified in medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating MD, CM in 1898. He subsequently practised as a medical doctor in Durban, South Africa. Dumat served as Vice-President of the Natal Coastal Branch of the British Medical Association. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1903.
