Harry Rainy was born in Glasgow in 1864. He was educated at the Edinburgh Academy and the University of Edinburgh, and served as Resident Medical Officer at Chalmers Hospital. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1896, later serving the College as Honorary Secretary, Examiner and Vice-President. He co-authored 'Clinical Methods' with Robert Hutchison in 1897 and is credited in contemporary accounts with early clinical use of X-rays in Edinburgh. He later served as Medical Adviser to the Prison Commissioner for Scotland. He died in Edinburgh in 1923.
