German Sims Woodhead

Sir German Sims Woodhead, the son of the publisher and MP Joseph Woodhead, trained at the University of Edinburgh, earning his MB CM in 1878 and his MD in 1881, for which he was awarded a gold medal. He began his teaching career at the University of Edinburgh and served as Superintendent of the Laboratory at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh from 1887 to 1890. He authored 'Practical Pathology' and 'Pathological Mycology' and founded the Journal of Pathology and Bacteriology, which he edited for many years. He also had a long association with The Lancet before his appointment as Professor of Pathology at the University of Cambridge. During the First World War he served as Inspector of Laboratories to the War Office and was involved in work at the Cambridgeshire Tuberculosis Colony at Papworth. He died in December 1921.
