George William Balfour was born in Sorn, Ayrshire. He initially intended to emigrate to Australia and qualified as a veterinary surgeon in preparation. Turning instead to medicine, he became a Licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and obtained his MD from St Andrews. After further study in Vienna he commenced medical practice in Cramond, near Edinburgh.
