George Martin

George Martine was born in Claremont, St Andrews in 1700 to James Martine and Margaret McGill. He studied at St Andrews, Edinburgh and Leiden, obtaining his MD from the University of St Andrews in 1722. From 1725-1728, he ran a medical school in the basement rooms at Surgeons Hall, Edinburgh with William Graeme. Upon its closure, he returned to St. Andrews to practise as a physician until 1739. He then moved to London, where he became physician to Lord Cathcart in his expedition to the West Indies in December 1739. He was interested in thermometry, becoming the first person to use the principles of differential thermal analysis. He died in Cartagena in 1741.
