George Magrath

Sir George Magrath was born in 1775 in County Tyrone, Ireland, the third son of John Magrath. He was awarded an MD from the University of St Andrews on 3 August 1805. He served as a surgeon in the Royal Navy from 1797 and was Flag Medical Officer to Nelson during the Mediterranean campaign. He was admitted a Licentiate of the College on 2 August 1814 and elected a Fellow on 1 November 1814. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1819 and served as physician to William IV when Lord High Admiral from 1827 to 1830. He was knighted in 1831 and became Inspector of Hospitals in 1841. He was admitted a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London in 1847. He later settled in Plymouth and died on 12 June 1857.
