George Lovell Gulland

George Lovell Gulland was born and trained in Edinburgh, earning his MB CM in 1886 and his MD in 1890. He worked at several Edinburgh hospitals and served as Assistant to Sir Thomas Grainger Stewart. He undertook research work as Assistant to Ray Lankester and was among the first staff appointed to the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh research laboratory, later becoming its director. In 1915 he was appointed Professor of Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, a post he held until his retirement in 1928. He published several works, including 'The Blood: A Guide to its Examination'. He served as a Major in the Royal Army Medical Corps and was President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh from 1923 to 1925. He died in Edinburgh in May 1941 aged seventy-nine.
