George Hunter trained at the University of Edinburgh, earning his MB CM with honours in 1867 and his MD in 1869. He became a Licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1868 and was elected a Fellow in 1870. He contributed articles on typhoid and puerperal fevers, kidney disease, and diseases of the eye, ear, and throat to the Edinburgh Medical Journal between 1876 and 1888 as a member of the Edinburgh Medico-Chirurgical Society. He was a member of the Obstetrical Society of Edinburgh from 1881 and served on its council. In 1890 he became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. His practice was based at Palmerston Place, Edinburgh, and in 1903 he served as a Justice of the Peace in Linlithgowshire.
