George Heron Aitchison graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1872 and became District Medical Officer for the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company in Mexborough, Yorkshire. He returned to Edinburgh in 1877, when he was elected a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, becoming a Fellow the following year. He remained in Edinburgh until his death in 1881.
