George Gavin Brown

George Gavin Brown was born in 1748 at Prior-Monagu in Lanarkshire. He was the son of George Browne, laird of Priorhill in the parish of Lesmahagow. He studied in Edinburgh, gaining his MD in 1779, and later earned an MA and MD from the University of St Andrews in 1797. Before 1803 he moved to Bath, where he worked as a surgeon. Around this time he took on the additional name and arms of Mill out of respect to David Mill of Montrose after inheriting, with John Mill, an estate in Grenada that included slave plantations. He was also physician to Louis XVIII of France, who made him a baron circa 1820. Brown married Maria Elizabeth Thomas, the only daughter of General Thomas of the East India Company. He died in 1842 aged 94 and asked to be buried near David Mill.
