George Freeland Barbour Simpson was born in Edinburgh in 1874, the second son of Sir Alexander Russell Simpson, Professor of Midwifery and Diseases of Women at the University of Edinburgh. He was educated at George Watson's College and the University of Edinburgh, graduating MB in 1898. After further training at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and the Royal Maternity Hospital, he undertook postgraduate study in Paris. He was admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1898 and elected a Fellow after being awarded the MD degree in 1905. He was appointed Assistant Physician at the Royal Maternity Hospital and Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion. He died in Edinburgh in 1958.
