George Elder

George Elder was born in East Lothian in 1869. He was educated at Knox Institute, Haddington, and graduated MB CM from the University of Edinburgh in 1891. After serving as a ship surgeon, he held resident posts at the Royal Infirmary, the Royal Hospital for Sick Children and the Maternity Hospital before entering private practice in Edinburgh. He graduated MD in 1896 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh the same year. He served as University Medical Tutor, Physician to the New Town Dispensary and Assistant Physician to Leith Hospital, and published jointly on childhood illness. He died in 1899, aged 30.
