George Dickson

George Dickson was born in 1772. Claims exist that he received his MD from the University of St Andrews in September 1796, but no records have been traced to verify this. In 1793 he became a surgeon in the 12th Regiment of Dragoons by purchase of commission. In 1800 he became a purveyor and was attached to the army serving in the Mediterranean under Sir Ralph Abercrombie. In 1801 he was in Egypt and in 1802 a purveyor at the Military Hospital in Valletta, Malta. By 1811 he was appointed purveyor to the Sicilian Command and in 1812 succeeded Joseph Gunson to the Purveyor's Department in the Peninsula. By 1813 he was dismissed for fraudulent practices and gross misconduct.
