George Bachmetieve

George Bachmatieve was born in Moscow, the son of a revenue official. Under the tutelage of Andrei Samborsky, the agronomist and dean of Ascension Cathedral, Tsarskoye Selo, Bachmativeve travelled to Britain to continue his education. After studies in London he enrolled at the University of Edinburgh, receiving an MD in 1786 for a thesis on smallpox. Despite his adherence to the Brunonian school of medical thought, in contrast to the prevailing Cullenite idea, Bachmatieve became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and was President of the Natural History Society in 1785. He returned to Moscow in 1788, but died less than three months later.
