Francis William Nicol Haultain

Francis William Nichol Haultain was born in Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, and trained in Edinburgh, Prague, Vienna, and Berlin. He earned his MB CM from the University of Edinburgh in 1882 and his MD in 1889. He initially worked as Assistant to Sir John Halliday Croom and later taught at the Edinburgh Extramural Medical School. He co-authored 'The Handbook of Obstetric Nursing' with James Haig Ferguson and wrote 'The Practical Handbook of Midwifery'. He established an obstetric nursing home that later developed into the Hospital for Diseases of Women and served as an Examiner for several universities. He died in Edinburgh in 1921 after a prolonged respiratory illness.
