Francis Walter Moinet was born in Edinburgh circa 1842, the son of an insurance company manager. He trained in Edinburgh and Paris and obtained his MD from Edinburgh in 1870. He worked as House Surgeon and later Resident Physician at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, and also served as one of the Medical Officers of the Royal Public Dispensary. He lectured on materia medica at the Edinburgh School of Medicine and was appointed Examiner in Chemistry for the College, becoming a Fellow in 1872. His most significant publication was 'A treatise on the causes of heart disease'. He also published articles including 'Quinine, a physiological antidote to malarial poison' and 'On angina pectoris', both in the Edinburgh Medical Journal. He died in Edinburgh on 6 September 1886.
