Edward Milligan lived from 1784 to 1833. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh from 1812 to 1815, qualifying MD in 1815 and publishing his dissertation 'Dissertatio medica inauguralis, de hernia'. He became a member of the Royal Medical Society in 1818 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1824. Milligan served on the committee of the Medical Provident Institution of Scotland from 1825 to 1833. He later became a lecturer in medical science and is known for his translation of Francois Magendie's 'An Elementary Compendium of Physiology for the Use of Students', published in 1831.
