Edward Arnold Carmichael

Edward Arnold Carmichael was born on 25 March 1896, the younger son of Dr Edward Carmichael. After the First World War he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating MB ChB with Gold Medal in 1921. In 1923 he was appointed Medical Officer at the National Hospital, Queen Square, London, and after joining the senior staff he entered private practice. He later became Director of the Medical Research Council Neurological Research Unit at the National Hospital and remained associated with the unit until retirement. He was an active member of the Physiological Society and continued lecturing in the United Kingdom and the United States after retirement. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh on 2 December 1926. He died on 9 February 1978 aged 81.
