Douglas Chalmers Watson was born in Scotland in 1870, the son of Walter Watson MD. He was educated at George Watson's College before studying chemical physiology at the University of Edinburgh between 1897 and 1898. After serving as House Physician at the Royal Infirmary and the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1901. He worked in Sir Edward Sharpey-Schafer's laboratory on nutritional research and was awarded the Alvarenga Prize by the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. He published widely on diet and nutrition, including 'The Book of Diet' (1913) and 'Food and Feeling in Health and Disease' (1915), and was founding editor of 'The Encyclopaedia Medica'. Douglas Chalmers Watson died in 1946 at Fenton Barns, East Lothian.
