Disney Hubert Dusch Cran was born in 1887 and educated at the Royal High School, Edinburgh. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating in 1911 and proceeding MD in 1919 with a thesis entitled 'Influenza: Clinical Notes on 50 Cases with Pathological and Bacteriological Observations on 100 Autopsies'. During the First World War he served with the British Red Cross Society and the Royal Army Medical Corps, reaching the rank of Captain. In 1924, Cran married the musician Margaret 'Peggy' Tennant Cochrane. Thereafter he practised in London and died there in 1938.
