Diarmid Noel Paton was born in Edinburgh in 1859 and graduated MB from the University of Edinburgh in 1882. He served as House Physician at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and the Royal Hospital for Sick Children. In 1886 he was appointed Lecturer in Physiology at Surgeons' Hall and in 1890 became Superintendent of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh research laboratory. From 1906 until his retirement in 1928 he was Professor of Physiology at the University of Glasgow. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1914 and died in Peeblesshire in 1928.
