Désiré Joseph Mercier was born 21 November 1851. He was Archbishop of Mechelen from 1906 until his death on 23 January 1926. He is best known for being a symbol of resistance in Belgium against the German occupation, publishing a pastoral letter entitled 'Patriotism and Endurance' which was widely read. He was awarded honorary fellowship for the role he played during WWI.
