David Murray Lyon was born in 1888, the son of William Malcolm Lyon, veterinary surgeon. He graduated MB from the University of Edinburgh in 1910 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1916. Lyon served as Professor of Therapeutics and Clinical Medicine at the University of Edinburgh and was part of the Royal Infirmary team that pioneered the clinical use of insulin in the treatment of diabetes. He authored several medical textbooks, including 'The Essentials of Medical Treatment' (1940). He served as President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh from 1945 to 1947 and died in Edinburgh in 1956.
