David Melville

David Melville, 3rd Earl of Leven and 2nd Earl of Melville, was a politician and prominent military figure. Born 5 May 1660 to George Melville, 1st Earl of Melville, and Lady Catherine Leslie, he fled with his father to the United Provinces in 1683, the pair having been accused of involvement with the Rye House Plot. There he became involved in the Glorious Revolution, acting as an envoy for William of Orange and commanding troops in Scotland. He went on to hold a number of military and political roles, including keeper of Edinburgh Castle and commander-in-chief in Scotland, though his outspoken criticism sometimes saw him stripped of positions. He died on 6 June 1728.
