David James Galloway

David James Galloway was born in Edinburgh on 8 May 1858 and was educated at Daniel Stewart's College and the University of Edinburgh, where he qualified in medicine. In 1885 he travelled to Singapore to practise as a Physician and remained based in the Straits Settlements for most of his career. He became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1899 and was awarded MD by the University of Edinburgh in 1900. Galloway was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London in 1902. He served as medical adviser to the Johore royal family and held appointments on the Executive Councils of the Straits Settlements and Johore. He also taught at government medical schools in the region and published on tropical medicine and public health. Galloway retired from practice in 1931 and died in Singapore on 5 March 1943.
