David Duncan Main

David Duncan Main was born in Kirkmichael, Perth and Kinross, in 1856. He studied medicine at the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh and obtained the Triple Qualification of the Scottish Corporations in 1881. He immediately entered medical missionary work in China and from 1881 to 1927 served as Superintendent of the Church Missionary Society Medical Mission in Hangzhou, where he was also Principal of the Hangzhou Medical Training College. He translated several medical texts into Chinese. During a return to Scotland he was admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1901 and elected a Fellow in 1905, and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1911. He died in Edinburgh in 1934.
