David Berry Hart was born in Edinburgh, the son of James Hart, a printer, and graduated MB CM from the University of Edinburgh in 1877. He worked as Assistant to Professor Sir Alexander R Simpson and practised as an obstetrician and gynaecologist. In 1882 he co-authored, with Freeland Barbour, 'The Manual of Gynaecology', an early systematic textbook in the field.
