Colin Lauder

Colin Lauder was born in Edinburgh, the son of George Lauder (1712-1752), grandson of John Lauder (surgeon and deacon of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh), and great-great-grandson of Sir John Lauder, first baronet of Fountainhall. He was a medical student at the University of Edinburgh and served as a surgeon in the 17th Foot Regiment from 1770 to 1772. In 1772 he became both a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a burgess of Edinburgh in right of his father. He gained an MD from the University of St Andrews in 1786. He was also one of the original members of the Aesculapian Club (1773- ) and of the Harveian Society of Edinburgh (1782- ). Lauder was married four times and was the father of William Preston Lauder (1788-1850), a physician specialising in obstetrics. He was also surgeon to the philosopher David Hume. Lauder died in 1831 aged 82.
