Charles Stuart was born in 1745 in Fife, the son of James Stuart, the future Lord Provost of Edinburgh. Stuart's initial career was as a minister; however after losing faith with the Church of Scotland he trained as a doctor. Earning his MD from the University of Edinburgh with a thesis on the nervous system, he established a medical practice on Nicolson Street. Stuart held a number of roles in the College, including Elector and Fiscal Officer, before serving as President of this College from 1806 to 1809. He was also a co-founder of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Stuart died in 1826 in Edinburgh.
